Welcome to Sustainability Research Consulting (SRC)

Karl-Werner BrandSince June 2008 I have been working as a freelance consultant, author and lecturer in the field of (social scientific) sustainability research. After three decades of teaching at different universities, and after 15 years as a senior research fellow and director of the Munich Institute of Social Research (MPS) I would like to utilize my experiences on a more general level and in a different way.

On the one hand, my intention is to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of sustainability problems. This implies a basic methodological challenge: the question is how to integrate the partial insights and the heterogeneous sources of knowledge which are produced by different disciplines and approaches which often seem to be mutually exclusive.

On the other hand, I would like to contribute to a better understanding of the typical conflicts of, and barriers to the transformation processes towards sustainability in the various domains of social life (food, transport, housing etc.). Based on a systematic review and contextualization of relevant studies and pilot projects, the aim is to develop more appropriate, socially embedded strategies towards sustainability.
